Eyelid Aesthetics – Blepharoplasty

Eyelid Aesthetics – Blepharoplasty

As the age progresses, the muscles around the eyes, the fat layer, and the skin begin to weaken and sag. These changes are manifested by fat bags under our eyes, droopy eyelids, and wrinkles, especially in mimic areas. Blepharoplasty, also known as eyelid aesthetics, is an operation performed to eliminate aesthetic problems in and around the eye. Excess skin on the upper eyelid is removed, so to speak, an eye lift is performed.  The surgery can be performed on only the upper eyelid, the lower eyelid, or both, depending on the needs of the person. Eyelids are anatomically more sensitive than other aesthetic and functional parts of the face. Therefore, the operation requires meticulous planning, surgical technique, and experience.

Who can have eyelid aesthetics?

People over the age of 30 generally request blepharoplasty aesthetic operation. However, it can be applied at a much earlier age in people with genetically drooping eyelids. If you are asked questions such as “you look tired, are you sleepless” from your surroundings, the reason may be sagging on your eyelids. If one of your eyes looks dimmer when you go in front of the mirror or the fold line of your eyelid is not clear, if you have a tired facial appearance, you may be a suitable candidate for eyelid aesthetics. Apart from what we have mentioned, even if your eyelid droop is not noticeable, you can get information about what can be done as an examination if you want a younger look around your eyes.

How is blepharoplasty surgery performed?

The surgery can be applied to only the upper, only the lower, or both eyelids, depending on the need. It is performed under general or local anesthesia, depending on the procedure to be performed. Surgery applied to the upper eyelid briefly involves removing excess skin and muscle tissue from the area. To avoid scarring on the eyelid, an incision is made in the fold line of the eyelid so that it is not visible from the outside. Sometimes one of the reasons for the low lid is loosening in the forehead and eyebrow area. For this reason, forehead lift and eyebrow lift operations may need to be applied together to get the best results.

The procedure on the lower eyelid is aimed to eliminate problems such as under-eye bags and under-eye wrinkles. The appearance of the lower eyelid is improved with an incision made about 1.5 mm below the eyelashes. Depending on the type of deformation, fat bags can be removed, stretching can be performed or the tissues in the area where the bags are formed can spread towards the upper part of the cheek. The incision is stitched from the lash line area to ensure that there is no scar.

How long does the surgery take?

Aesthetic surgery applied to the upper eyelid to relieve droopy eyelids takes about 30 minutes. The surgical procedure on the lower eyelids takes an average of 1-1.5 hours. Whether or not other aesthetic procedures will be applied to the face with the surgery affects the duration of the operation.
